Dry Construction |
When flagstone is laid using dry construction the stones rest on a sand base on the existing ground. Dry construction requires less work and tools than wet laid flagstone.

- 2) Weed barrier
- 3) Gravel
- 4) Sand
- 5) Flagstone
- 6) Sand is swept into the empty joints

Wet Construction |
| While wet laid flagstone is more costly than the dry laid method it is also more permanent and should remain maintenance free for decades. |
| The wet construction method for flagstone not only includes a packed gravel base, but it also a concrete base that is reinforced with wire mesh and/or rebar, and concrete footings that reach below the frost line. The stones are then laid in a setting bed of wet grout. |
The layers for wet construction include:
- 1) Packed level ground
- 2) Gravel
- 3) Concrete footings and slab
- 4) A setting bed of grout
- 5) Flagstone
- 6) The empty joints are filled with a concrete and sand mixture
