Wet and Dry Laid Flagstone

Better built patios begin with well planned hardscape like flagstone. There are a number of options when it comes to selecting the look that you want, like the shape, cut and size of the flagstone. Also to be considered is the method of construction. This article discusses dry laid and wet laid flagstone, or what is also called dry construction and wet construction. By considering the differences in the two methods you will be aided in determining which one is right for your home.

Dry Construction

When flagstone is laid using dry construction the stones rest on a sand base on the existing ground. Dry construction requires less work and tools than wet laid flagstone.

The layers for dry construction include:

  • 1) Packed level ground
  • 2) Weed barrier
  • 3) Gravel
  • 4) Sand
  • 5) Flagstone
  • 6) Sand is swept into the empty joints

Wet Construction

While wet laid flagstone is more costly than the dry laid method it is also more permanent and should remain maintenance free for decades.
The wet construction method for flagstone not only includes a packed gravel base, but it also a concrete base that is reinforced with wire mesh and/or rebar, and concrete footings that reach below the frost line. The stones are then laid in a setting bed of wet grout.

The layers for wet construction include:

  • 1) Packed level ground
  • 2) Gravel
  • 3) Concrete footings and slab
  • 4) A setting bed of grout
  • 5) Flagstone
  • 6) The empty joints are filled with a concrete and sand mixture

Just as with other trades, proper prep work and technical knowledge are vitally important to the finished product turning out well. A professional mason will not only be experienced with all of the tricks of the trade, but will be familiar with requirements that are peculiar to your climate and region. A skilled, experienced contractor will also ensure that the flagstone is installed for proper drainage and will know the right grade of gravel and sand that is needed.

What does flagstone add?

  • A flagstone patio adds beauty to your home's exterior.
  • A flagstone patio adds to your home's resale value.
  • A flagstone patio adds to your family's enjoyment by providing useful outdoor living space.

Dry laid flagstone needs to have the ground compacted, a gravel layer, and a sand layer before the flagstone is installed. Everything must be level! Where there is a gradient, or slope, it needs to be a consistent slope with a true surface.

Wet laid flagstone requires the proper groundwork including packed gravel, a concrete slab and concrete footings. Keeping everything level is vital! Again, any sloped surfaces should be a flush, gradual grade with a true surface.

Wet or Dry ...
Which Method is Right for your Patio Project?

Well, if you are looking for a zero maintenance patio, go with the wet construction method. It is worth the initial investment. Also, if you are installing flagstone terraces by a pool or spa, wet laid is better here too. You don't want loose sand tracking into your pool!

However, if you don't mind lifting and re-leveling your patio stones if they shift, or if you don't get a lot of frost, the dry method may be enough for your project.

Have a professional flagstone installer survey your property to see which method will work the best for your flagstone patio! Get free quotes from professional contractors in your area!
